... to murphy (-ish)

we were home from the beach barely long enough to do some laundry and buy some groceries, before heading down I-40 in the opposite direction to join the basses at their mountain house.  the surroundings gave the weekend a totally different vibe, but no matter which side of the state we happen to find ourselves, we always have an amazing time with them.

last week it was a turtle in the middle of the road; this week it's a fish that web caught ... but notice that susanna is always happy to post near the animal without having to touch it.  momma didn't raise no dummy

liam was the only mann to catch anything -- and it wriggled off the line before he could pull it all the way out.  and sadly, we have no photo proof of it.  which sort of goes along with what they say about fishermen anyway, right?

s'mores over a firepit on a cool mountain evening ... if there's a better dessert, i don't know it

after last year's tubing debacle, it took some convincing for liam to try it again ... but he did, and we had a blast.  here's our motley crew, minus the photographer bill, in a haphazard conglomeration of tubes, floats, and an unpictured kayak

our saturday evening hike was calm and peaceful ...

... until this happened.  (i did get through it, after i forced myself to stop laughing)

i have no idea what marshall was wishing for, but i'm pretty sure susanna's wish was that her mother not embarrass her by getting stuck in a fence ever again

our final afternoon took us up off the blue ridge parkway -- and for some reason, provides us with the only photos of liam.  (not quite sure how that happened)

yep, that's marshall and susanna again ... but only because we three opted to end our hike after the picnic lunch in the meadow, while the rest of the group retrieved the car

a liam sighting again!

from manteo (-ish) ...

way back when i was in maybe fourth or fifth grade, our P.E. teacher put together some sort of exercise program for the school to promote running.  she called it From Manteo To Murphy and hung this enormous north carolina map on the gym wall.  i don't remember the specifics of it all, but we were all supposed to keep track of how many miles we were running and report them on a regular basis.  she would then record the mileage progress on that enormous map, with the ultimate goal being that the school (or grade or even class? the details escape me) to have a total mileage that would equal a trip across the state -- from manteo (along the coast) to murphy (in the mountains.)  (and full disclosure: i'm so bad at state geography that before i published this post, i actually had to look up which city was west and which was east.  i guess the P.E. program failed me in that regard.)

anyway, i felt a bit like we had submerged ourselves in our own version of From Manteo To Murphy with the basses this month.  we spent a long fourth of july holiday with them at topsail, returned home for four days, and then spent the next weekend with them at bill's parents' house in west jefferson.  there's something really special about hiking up a mountain trail on a saturday evening after supper, and looking at your watch and realizing that exactly seven days prior, we had our feet strolling in the wet sand by the ocean's edge.  we never forget how blessed we are to live in a state where we can do both -- and to have access to vacation homes generously shared by our parents.

we had way too much fun to contain these pictures to just one post, so consider this our manteo installment, with murphy to follow.

the kids and i were actually down for ten days.  susanna and i headed down first and joined my parents for lunch before they headed home.  as we were about to pull into the driveway, we braked for a new friend -- and had to get out to say hello, of course

chris had to go home to work, so i had two full days with just the kids before chris returned with the basses.  on day one, i was quite pleased with myself for successfully erecting our new sun shelter.  on day two, the wind snapped the stupid thing in half and "i am woman, hear me roar" was no longer on my lips

whiffleball on the lawn with a leftie batter

after dinner most evenings, we headed out to the beach to work up an appetite for dessert

little did we know that dessert would be served to us one of those evenings, courtesy of a woman packing up to leave who was eager to get rid of the popsicles in her freezer.  she found four eager helpers

... make that five

our ears were glued to the weather radio bill brought in anticipation of some major issues with hurricane arthur.  here's susanna and chris, getting in a few last rides before we holed up inside to watch the storm blow in

thank goodness we were spared ... just some bad wind and rain (and cancelled fireworks)

marshall and susanna became cupcake chefs to help us celebrate the 4th

we needed two more cupcakes to make an entire flag ... but you get the idea

an amazing time with amazing friends (and a sand turtle to boot)

off his rocker

(this should have been posted the second week of june.  catching up, slowly but surely ...)

liam and i just spent five days up at kanuga, the conference center of the episcopal diocese of western north carolina.  even though i had attended a few events there back in high school, and even taught at the middle school in its town of hendersonville for a while before the kids were born, i couldn't remember much about the place.  but the second we stepped on the property i knew we were going to have an amazing week.  i was attending an annual christian formation conference as a sunday school volunteer, and liam was able to tag along because of the wonderful kids' camp-like program they offer to children of the conference participants. (susanna still had four days of school to attend, but she lived like a rock star that week with playdates galore and lots of daddy-daughter time.)

check out liam's schedule for the week.  sadly, i wasn't with him for any of this so i have no photos to share; i'm especially bummed that i didn't get to see him scale the super tall climbing tower.  with all the fun activities -- archery! lake swimming! game night!  -- care to guess what his favorite one was?  table tennis

we shared cabin 8 with my friend lisa and her daughter evie.  it was built in 1906 (!) and was charming, with a screened porch (that's liam on the swing), small family room with a fireplace, three bedrooms, and two baths.  the only thing it lacked was an a/c, but it was so cool at night that we slept under blankets with the windows open

we had free time some afternoons and filled it with tennis, hiking, and checkers
a mother-son selfie (love the huge cross on the other side of the water)

thursday evening, we attended a wonderful healing eucharist service and then walked up to the deck that overlooks the lake for a last visit before heading home the following morning.  we found two weathered rocking chairs next to each other and sat in them, holding hands, quietly rocking and listening to the cacophony of sounds that you only hear when immersed in nature on a summer's night.  i reflected on what i had learned that week in my workshops, grateful for the opportunity to grow in my faith as well as for the opportunity to spend such quality time with my son.  he gave my hand a squeeze as we continued to rock, staring across the water towards the big white cross.  and then he turned to me, obviously feeling the same sense of peace that i did.

"this is so awesome, mommy," he said, smiling.  "i feel like we're just like the people in a cialis commercial."
